T&R Theakston

Industry: Brewing
Type: MBO
Transaction Value: N/D

Business: T&R Theakston owns and operates the Theakston brewery in Masham, originally established in 1827. The brewery supplies a wide range of real ales to public houses, hotels and retail outlets and maintains a strong brand that is recognised throughout the UK.

Deal: Following a decision by Scottish Courage to focus on its four main global brands, the Theakstons brand of beer was considered to be non-core. The four great-grandsons of founder Robert Theakston took the opportunity to acquire the business back, following the original sale to Scottish Courage in 1987, via a management buy-out led by Simon Theakston and Collin Wood.

Our Role: McInnes Corporate Finance worked closely with the Theakston family to identify all the key issues concerning the transfer of operational control over the brewing and the future of the Theakston brand. Determining and finalising the terms of the ongoing supply arrangements to the satisfaction of the external funders, the Scottish Courage board and the Theakston family was a complex task that required creative thinking and strong project management skills that McInnes Corporate Finance were able to offer.

The planning and attention to detail which McInnes Corporate Finance brought to the process enabled clear debates to take place on key issues throughout the process. As a family we are delighted to have worked with such a professional team.
